How to Remove a Background in Photoshop (and a Faster Free Way)
Photoshop gives you several ways to take the background out of a photo. Some take ten seconds, others take an hour, and the right one depends on how messy the edges are. This guide walks through the three methods most people use, says honestly where each one falls short, and then shows a faster free route for simple jobs.
Before you start: unlock the layer
When you open a JPG, Photoshop puts it on a locked layer called Background. Most tools will not delete pixels from it. Double-click the layer in the Layers panel, press OK to turn it into a normal layer, and keep a copy of the original file in case you want to start over.
Method 1: the Remove Background button
Recent versions of Photoshop include a one-click option that runs automatic subject detection.
- Open your image and unlock the layer as described above.
- Open the Properties panel. If it is hidden, choose Window › Properties.
- Under Quick Actions, click Remove Background. In some versions the same button also appears in the contextual task bar at the bottom of the canvas.
- Photoshop hides everything it thinks is background and adds a layer mask for you, so nothing is permanently erased.
- Check the result at 100% zoom, then fix mistakes by painting on the mask: black hides, white reveals.
Method 2: Select Subject plus a layer mask
This is the same idea with more control, and it works when you want to check the selection before committing.
- Pick the Object Selection Tool or go to Select › Subject. Photoshop draws marching ants around the main subject.
- Zoom in and look at hair, fur and thin objects. Use Select and Mask (in the options bar) if the outline looks rough.
- In Select and Mask, use the Refine Edge Brush on hair and soft edges, and turn on Decontaminate Colors to remove colored fringes from the old background.
- Set Output To to Layer Mask and press OK.
- Hide the original background by switching off any layer underneath, and you will see the checkerboard that means transparency.
Method 3: the Pen Tool for hard edges
For products, logos and anything with crisp edges, the Pen Tool still gives the cleanest outline. Click around the object to place anchor points, drag handles to bend curves, and close the path. Then right-click the path, choose Make Selection, and add a layer mask. It is slow and takes practice, but a hand-drawn path does not guess the way automatic detection does.
How to save a transparent background
A cutout only stays transparent if you save it in a format that supports it. Go to File › Export › Export As and choose PNG with the Transparency box ticked. JPG cannot store transparency and will fill the empty area with white or black. If you plan to place the image on a web page, WebP also keeps transparency and is usually smaller.
Where Photoshop struggles
- Hair, fur and fine mesh often keep a halo of the old background that you need to clean by hand.
- Low-contrast images, such as a gray subject on a gray wall, confuse Select Subject.
- Glass, smoke and reflections are semi-transparent, and a single mask cannot describe them well.
- It needs a paid subscription and a reasonably capable computer, which is overkill for one profile picture.
A faster free way
If you only need a clean cutout, opening Photoshop is more work than the task deserves. Our Free AI Background Remover does the same first pass in a few seconds. Drop in a JPG, PNG or WebP, and the AI model (BiRefNet, running on Cloudflare) removes the background and sends the result straight back. There is no account, no sign-up and no watermark.
Your image goes over an encrypted connection to the site's server, and the site does not save or keep it. Location and camera metadata are removed from the copy that is sent. Images up to 20 MB and 4096 px on the long side stay at full size, and larger ones are scaled down first. You get a free daily allowance of 30 images per visitor.
You can export a transparent PNG, a JPG or a WebP. You can also put a white or colored background behind the subject, use your own image, or blur the original. Try BG Remover for the shortest path, or see how to make a background transparent if PNG output is what you need.
Which should you use?
Use Photoshop when you need pixel-level control, such as retouching hair for a print ad. Use the free tool for everyday jobs: marketplace photos, profile pictures, slides and social posts. Many people run the free tool first and only open Photoshop to polish the edges of a hard image.
Questions
How do I remove the background in Photoshop quickly?
Unlock the layer, open the Properties panel and click Remove Background under Quick Actions. Photoshop adds a layer mask that hides the background, which you can refine with a brush.
How do I delete a background in Photoshop without losing quality?
Use a layer mask instead of the eraser. A mask hides pixels without deleting them, so you can undo mistakes later. Export as PNG to keep full quality and transparency.
Why does Photoshop leave a white edge around my cutout?
That is leftover color from the old background. In Select and Mask, turn on Decontaminate Colors or shrink the selection by a pixel or two.
Is there a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop for removing backgrounds?
Yes. Our free background remover works in a web page with no account and no watermark, and exports PNG, JPG or WebP. It has a daily allowance of 30 images per visitor.
