How to Remove a Background in Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator is a vector program, so its approach to backgrounds differs from photo editors. You can trace an image into shapes, hide the background with a clipping mask, or, in recent versions, use an automatic removal option. Each has a different result, and the right choice depends on whether you need a vector or a photo cutout.
Method 1: Image Trace for logos and flat art
Image Trace turns a raster picture into vector paths. It is the best fit for logos, icons and scanned drawings with a white background.
- Place your image with File › Place and click it with the Selection Tool.
- Open Window › Image Trace.
- Choose a preset such as High Fidelity Photo or 3 Colors, or set the mode manually. For a one-color logo, try Black and White.
- Turn on Preview to see the result, then click Image Trace.
- Click Expand in the Control bar to convert the trace to editable paths.
- Select the white background shape with the Direct Selection Tool and press Delete.
Method 2: a clipping mask for photos
A clipping mask hides everything outside a shape, so it works when you want to keep a photo as a photo.
- Place the photo on the artboard.
- Use the Pen Tool to draw a closed path around the subject. Take your time on curves and add anchor points where the edge changes direction.
- Select both the photo and the path.
- Choose Object › Clip › Make Clipping Mask, or press Ctrl+7 (Command+7 on Mac).
- The background is now hidden, not deleted. Double-click the group to edit the path or release the mask under Object › Clip › Release.
Method 3: Remove Background in the Properties panel
Recent versions of Illustrator include a Remove Background option for placed raster images. Select the image, open the Properties panel and look for Remove Background under Quick Actions. It uses automatic subject detection and applies the result as a mask. If you do not see it, your version may not have the feature, so rely on the first two methods.
Export with transparency
Use File › Export › Export for Screens or Export As and choose PNG. In the PNG options, set Background Color to Transparent. SVG keeps vector shapes and transparency, which suits web graphics. JPG does not support transparency and will add a white fill.
Where Illustrator struggles
- It is not designed for photo retouching, so hair and soft edges are hard to mask cleanly.
- The Pen Tool path is accurate but slow for complex subjects.
- Traced photos often look posterized or heavy, and the file can grow large.
- It requires a paid subscription and some learning time.
A faster free way
For a photo or a quick logo cutout, our Free AI Background Remover saves the effort. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP, and an AI model (BiRefNet, running on Cloudflare) removes the background in a few seconds. It is free, with no account, no sign-up and no watermark.
The image goes over an encrypted connection to the site's server and comes straight back. The site does not save or keep images, and location and camera metadata are removed from the copy that is sent. Images up to 20 MB and 4096 px on the long side stay at full size. The free daily allowance is 30 images per visitor.
Download a transparent PNG, then place it in Illustrator or trace it afterward if you want vector shapes. For logos on a white background, try the logo background remover; for any other image, start at BG Remover.
One more point on file size: a traced photo can contain thousands of paths, which slows Illustrator down. If you only need a cutout for a layout, a PNG placed on the artboard keeps the document light and fast, and you can still resize it without redoing the mask.
Tips for cleaner results
- Work on a copy of the artboard so you can compare the original with the traced or masked version.
- Use Smart Guides and Outline view (Ctrl+Y or Command+Y) to see stray points the mask may hide.
- Keep the mask path slightly inside the edge of the subject to avoid a thin line of old background.
- Embed the placed image before sending the file to others, otherwise the link to the original may break.
If the result will be used on the web, export at the size you need and check it against a dark page, since light halos show up more clearly there.
Choosing the right approach
Pick Image Trace when you need vector output, a clipping mask for precise control, and the free tool for fast photo cutouts. Many designers cut out the photo online first and then finish the layout in Illustrator.
