AI Background Remover

An AI model finds the subject in your photo and removes everything behind it. It is free to use online, with no account and no watermark.

Sent securely, processed, and never saved.

How AI removes a background

Older tools remove pixels by colour. They work well on a green screen or a plain white wall, then fall apart on a busy street. An AI background remover works differently. It has been trained on a large number of images where the subject is already marked out, so it learns what a subject looks like, not just which colours sit next to each other.

This site uses BiRefNet, an AI segmentation model that runs on Cloudflare. For every photo it produces a mask, which is a grey map with one value per pixel. White areas are kept, black areas are removed, and the shades in between become soft, partly transparent edges. That last part is why a strand of hair can fade out naturally instead of ending in a hard line.

Where AI does well, and where to check the result

  • People and portraits: hair and fine strands keep soft edges.
  • Animals: fur is treated the same way, so it is not cut off in a straight line.
  • Products: solid objects get a clean outline, which suits shop photos.
  • Busy backgrounds: rooms, streets and foliage are handled because the model looks at shape as well as colour.
  • Harder cases: clear glass, smoke and subjects the same colour as the wall behind them. Check these results closely.

The model decides what the subject is. If a photo has several possible subjects, it may keep more or less than you meant. Crop the photo first so the one you want fills the frame, then run it again.

AI compared with doing it by hand

In an editor you trace the subject yourself with a selection tool. That gives you full control, and for one important image it can be worth the effort. It also takes minutes per photo and some practice. The guides for Photoshop and GIMP show that route.

The AI route takes a few seconds and no skill, which is why it suits catalogues, thumbnails, profile pictures and anything you do more than once. For several photos in one go, the bulk background remover processes them together and downloads them as one zip.

You can also combine the two: let the AI make the first cut, then finish a difficult edge in your editor. A transparent PNG opens in any of them as a ready-made layer.

What this AI does not do

The tool has one job. It does not invent new pixels, so it will not generate a background from a text prompt, upscale a low-resolution photo or remove a watermark. It works on still images only, not video. The result is your own photo with the background taken away.

What goes behind the subject is up to you. Keep a transparent background, use a white background, swap in another colour or picture or blur the original scene.

The companion Android app, Background Eraser, goes further, with object removal and image expand.

Free, with fair limits

The AI runs on a server, so there is a free daily allowance of 30 images per visitor. There is no account, no payment and no watermark. Images up to 20 MB and 4096 px on the long side keep their full size, and larger ones are scaled down first. Your image goes over an encrypted connection, and the site does not save or keep it. Location and camera metadata are stripped from the copy that is sent.

How to remove a background with AI

  1. Choose a photo

Select or drop a JPG, PNG or WebP file. Nothing is sent until you pick one.

  2. Let the AI work

The model maps the subject and removes everything behind it, usually within a few seconds.

  3. Check the edges

Look closely at the checkerboard preview, especially around hair and thin parts of the subject.

  4. Download the result

Export a transparent PNG, a JPG or a WebP, or add a new background first.

Questions

What is an AI background remover?

It is a tool that uses a trained model to find the subject in a photo and delete everything else, without you selecting anything by hand.

Is this AI background remover free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. Each visitor gets 30 images per day.

Which AI model does it use?

It uses BiRefNet, an image segmentation model, running on Cloudflare.

Is AI better than removing a background by hand?

It is far faster. A careful manual selection can still beat it on a difficult photo, such as clear glass or a subject that blends into the wall.

Can the AI remove the background from a video?

No. It works on still images only, in JPG, PNG and WebP.
