What to look for in a background remover app

An app earns its place on your phone if you edit photos often or want to work straight from your gallery. Before you install one, check a few things that differ more than the marketing suggests.

• Platform: Android, iOS or both. Some apps exist only on one.
• Upload or not: many apps send your photo to a server to process it. Read the privacy policy for how long it is kept.
• Free tier: nearly all offer one, with limits. Check what is locked: export quality, watermark, number of images.
• Extra tools: object removal, templates, collage, text. Choose an app built for your real task.
• Export: transparent PNG is the format you need for logos and stickers.

The Background Eraser Android app

The Android app is built for quick fixes on your phone. Remove the background from a photo, erase a stray object such as a person walking through a shot, or expand the image beyond its original frame. If you mostly need a clean cutout and an occasional object removal, one app covers both without juggling several.

No install needed: the web tool

If you do not want another app, the free background remover works in any modern browser. No account, no sign-up and no watermark. The image goes over an encrypted connection to the site's server, the BiRefNet model running on Cloudflare removes the background, and the result comes straight back. The site does not save or keep images, and location and camera metadata are removed from the copy that is sent.

• Images up to 20 MB and 4096 px on the long side keep full size.
