How to Remove a Background in Canva
Canva is popular for posters, social posts and presentations, and removing a photo background is one of the most common things people try in it. The feature is simple to use, but it is not available to everyone. This guide shows the steps, the limits you may run into, and a free way to get the same result.
Is the Canva background remover free?
The Background Remover is part of Canva Pro, which is a paid plan. Free accounts can design and upload images, but the button for removing a background asks you to upgrade. Plans and trial offers change, so check what your own account shows rather than relying on an old screenshot. If you do not have a paid plan, skip to the free method further down.
Remove a background in Canva step by step
- Open Canva and start a design, or open an existing one.
- Upload your photo with Uploads › Upload files, then drag it onto the page. You can also click a photo that is already in your design.
- Select the image so a toolbar appears above the canvas.
- Click Edit image (on some layouts the button is called Edit photo) in the top toolbar.
- In the panel that opens, choose Background Remover. Canva processes the image and the background disappears, leaving a checkerboard pattern.
- Use the Erase and Restore brushes to fix areas that were removed by mistake or left behind. Change the brush size for tight spots.
- Click Apply, then place the cutout on any color, gradient or other image.
Export with a transparent background
A cutout is only transparent when you download it correctly. Click Share › Download, choose PNG as the file type, and tick the Transparent background option. That option is also tied to a paid plan. Without it, Canva exports the page with its background color filled in, which gives you a flat image rather than a cutout.
Tips for cleaner results in Canva
- Start with a sharp photo where the subject contrasts with the background.
- Use the Restore brush at a small size to bring back thin parts such as straps, glasses arms or plant stems.
- Zoom in to at least 200% when you check hair edges.
- Avoid putting a cutout over a very different color without checking for a pale outline.
Common problems and fixes
- The cutout looks jagged: zoom in, switch to the Restore brush and trace the edge slowly instead of dragging fast.
- A shadow is still there: the tool treats soft ground shadows as part of the subject, so erase them with the Erase brush.
- The result looks pixelated: Canva works at the size of your upload, so start with the largest version of the photo you have.
- Parts of the subject vanished: restore them with the brush, or try a photo taken in more even light.
Limits of the Canva method
The tool works on one image at a time, and you must go through Canva's editor each time. Busy backgrounds, shadows on the ground and subjects that blend into their surroundings can leave patches that need manual cleanup. It also ties the cutout to the Canva design, so if you want the PNG for another program you have to export it again.
A faster free way
For a simple cutout, you do not need a design app. Our Free AI Background Remover takes a JPG, PNG or WebP, removes the background in a few seconds and lets you download the result. There is no account, no sign-up, no watermark and no paid plan.
The AI model is BiRefNet, running on Cloudflare. Your image travels over an encrypted connection to the site's server, the background is removed, and the result comes straight back. The site does not save or keep images, and location and camera metadata are removed from the copy that is sent. You get a free daily allowance of 30 images per visitor.
- Open the tool and drop in your photo.
- Wait a few seconds for the cutout.
- Pick transparent, white, any color, your own image or blur.
- Download as PNG, JPG or WebP.
Then upload the PNG to Canva as an ordinary image and use it in your design. If your goal is a clean white backdrop for a shop photo, try the white background tool. For a quick comparison of options, see the best free background removers.
Which route should you pick?
If you already pay for Canva Pro and live in its editor, the built-in button is convenient. If you want a transparent PNG without a subscription, remove the background first with the free tool and bring the file into Canva afterward.
