How to Remove a Background in GIMP
GIMP is a free image editor that runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and it can make a background transparent. It takes more steps than a one-click tool, but you stay in full control. Here are the main methods and when each one works best.
Step one: add an alpha channel
Photos in JPG format have no transparency. If you delete pixels without an alpha channel, GIMP fills the hole with your background color instead of making it see-through. Fix that first.
- Open the image with File › Open.
- Right-click the layer in the Layers dialog.
- Choose Add Alpha Channel. If the option is grayed out, the layer already has one.
Method 1: Fuzzy Select for flat backgrounds
The Fuzzy Select tool (the magic wand icon) picks pixels of a similar color. It is quickest when the background is one solid color, such as a studio backdrop or a white sheet of paper.
- Pick Fuzzy Select from the toolbox, or press U.
- In Tool Options, raise or lower the Threshold. A higher value selects a wider range of colors.
- Click the background. Hold Shift and click again to add more areas.
- Press Delete. The selected area becomes transparent and shows a checkerboard.
- Choose Select › None and zoom in to check the edges.
Method 2: Foreground Select for complex subjects
When the background has many colors, Foreground Select (under Tools › Selection Tools) works better. You draw a rough outline around the subject, then paint over the subject with a brush so GIMP learns what to keep. Press Enter to confirm. Then use Select › Invert and press Delete to clear the background. Tool options such as Smoothing and Contiguous help soften the edges.
Method 3: a layer mask you can undo
Deleting pixels is permanent once you save. A layer mask is safer because it only hides them.
- Make your selection of the subject with any of the tools above.
- Right-click the layer and choose Add Layer Mask.
- Select White (full opacity) or Selection as the initial mask, then click Add.
- Paint on the mask with the Paintbrush: black hides, white shows.
- When you are happy, right-click the layer and choose Apply Layer Mask.
Clean up the edges
A raw selection often leaves a hard, stair-stepped outline. Before pressing Delete, choose Select › Feather and enter a small value such as 2 pixels to soften the border, or Select › Shrink by 1 pixel to cut away leftover fringe. After deleting, you can also use Layer › Transparency › Threshold Alpha only if you want a crisp edge for pixel art. For photos, soft edges almost always look more natural against a new background.
Export a transparent PNG
Go to File › Export As, type a name ending in .png and click Export. Leave the defaults unless you need a smaller file. PNG keeps the transparent area. If you export as JPG, GIMP will flatten the image onto a solid color, because JPG has no transparency.
Limits of GIMP for background removal
- Fuzzy Select struggles when the subject and background share similar colors.
- Foreground Select can leave jagged edges around hair and fur.
- Every image needs manual work, so batches take a long time.
- The interface has a learning curve, and tool names differ from other editors.
A faster free way
If your image is a photo of a person, product or pet and you just need the cutout, our Free AI Background Remover is quicker. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark. Drop in a JPG, PNG or WebP and an AI model (BiRefNet, running on Cloudflare) separates the subject in a few seconds.
The image goes over an encrypted connection to the site's server and comes straight back. The site does not save or keep images, and location and camera metadata are removed from the copy that is sent. Images up to 20 MB and 4096 px on the long side stay at full size. There is a free daily allowance of 30 images per visitor.
Download a transparent PNG, or choose JPG or WebP. You can also set a white or colored background, use your own picture, or blur the original. Open the tool at Free AI Background Remover, or read about making an image transparent in more detail.
GIMP or the free web tool?
Open GIMP when you want to refine a selection by hand or work on layers. Use the web tool for fast, repeatable cutouts, and open the PNG in GIMP afterward if you want to add shadows or compose a bigger scene.
