How to Make a Background Transparent in Paint
Microsoft Paint is the simplest image editor on Windows, and many people open it first when they need a transparent background. The answer depends on which version you have. The newer Paint on Windows 11 can remove a background in one click. The classic Paint from older systems cannot save transparency at all.
Check which Paint you have
Open Paint and look at the toolbar. Recent Windows 11 versions have a Remove background button in the Image group, along with layers and a dark mode option. If you see a plain ribbon with only Select, Crop and Resize, you are on the classic version, and the steps below for Windows 11 will not work. Windows Update usually brings the newer Paint to supported machines.
Remove a background in Paint on Windows 11
- Open your picture in Paint with File › Open, or right-click the file and choose Open with › Paint.
- Click Remove background in the Image group of the toolbar.
- Paint cuts out the main subject and shows the result on a transparent grid. If the toolbar offers Select all first, use it so the whole image is processed; otherwise draw a rectangle selection around only the part you want to keep.
- Check the edges. If you used a rectangle selection, only the area inside it was processed.
- Choose File › Save as › PNG picture. Do not save as JPEG, which has no transparency.
Why classic Paint cannot do it
In classic Paint, the Select tool has a Transparent selection option, but it only works while you move a piece around inside Paint. The background becomes see-through on the canvas, yet when you save, the file has no real transparent pixels. Older Paint also cannot save an alpha channel in a way other programs read. If you copy a selection into another program, you may get a white box instead.
You can try the Transparent selection trick for a quick paste into another Paint document, but it will not give you a usable transparent PNG. For that, you need either Windows 11 Paint or a different tool.
Limits of Paint's Remove background
- It finds a single main subject. If the photo has several people or objects, it can drop some.
- There are no brushes for fixing edges afterward, so a mistake means starting over.
- Hair, fur and fine detail are often rough.
- It handles one image at a time.
- The feature depends on your Windows version and may not be present on every device.
A faster free way that works on any computer
If your Paint cannot remove backgrounds, or you want better edges, use our Free AI Background Remover. It runs in a web page, so it works on older Windows, Mac, Chromebooks and phones alike. It is free, needs no account, and adds no watermark.
Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP and an AI model (BiRefNet, running on Cloudflare) removes the background in a few seconds. Your image travels over an encrypted connection to the site's server and the result comes straight back; the site does not save or keep images, and location and camera metadata are removed from the copy that is sent. Images up to 20 MB and 4096 px on the long side keep their full size. The free allowance is 30 images per visitor per day.
- Open the tool and drop in your picture.
- Wait a few seconds for the cutout.
- Keep it transparent, or add a white or colored background.
- Download as PNG for transparency, or JPG or WebP.
The transparent PNG opens in Paint, Word, PowerPoint and almost every editor. See make a background transparent for more output options, or remove a white background if your image is a scan or logo on white.
Tips before you start
- Pick a photo where the subject stands out in color or brightness from what is behind it.
- Make a copy of the file first, since Paint can overwrite the original in one click.
- Check the result on a dark and a light color to spot leftover fringes.
- Keep the original image if you ever need a higher quality version later, because every save in a lossy format reduces detail.
If you only want to put text or a border around the cutout, Paint is fine for that part. Open the transparent PNG, add what you need, and save again as PNG so the transparent area is preserved.
Quick recap
On Windows 11, use Remove background in Paint and save as PNG. On anything older, classic Paint cannot make a true transparent image, so use a free online tool and bring the PNG into Paint if you want to add text or shapes.
